Can’t increase MySQL max_connection stuck at 214

Issue :

  • Increased the max_connection value to max_connections=2500 in my.cnf.
grep -rnw max_connections /etc/mysql/

Output: max_connections = 2500

  • But max_connection value stuck in 214 Connections.

Cause :

Default open_files_limit for MySQL has been reached.

Resolution :

1. Find out whether MySQL, or MariaDB service is used:

  systemctl list-unit-files | grep -E 'mysql|mariadb'

Output: mariadb.service enabled

2. Create an override for the service file.

systemctl edit mysql.service

3. Add the following content

 [Service]
 LimitNOFILE=4096

You can also define LimitNOFILE=infinity.

4. Restart MySQL Service.

service mysql restart

Verify :

Run the below query to check max_connection.

show variables like 'max_connections';

Output:

| Variable_name | Value |
+—————–+——-+
| max_connections | 2500 |
+—————–+——-+
1 row in set (0.01 sec)
